After a couple of close calls, Koka Davladze triumphed in the final match at the September 23 stop on the Tri-State Tour, taking the title over Hector Ruiz. The $1,500-added tournament drew 56 amateur players to Gotham City Billiards in Brooklyn, NY.
Winning the hill-hill thriller against Dave Shlemperis in the winners’ side final four put Davladze in the hot seat match. His opponent there, Ruiz, had just sent Mike Harrington to the one-loss side of the chart 6-3. It was another tight escape, but Davladze came out the winner 8-6.
Tri State Tour Shlemperis soon was eliminated by Brian Marshall 7-5 in the next round, heading home in fifth place. Harrington joined him after his match against Gail Glazebrook ended 6-4. Another double-hill match ensued to determine fourth place, with Glazebrook being ousted by Marshall 7-6.
Ruiz was determined to earn a rematch with Davladze and edged aside Marshall, who had just won nine matches in a row after a first-round loss, in the semifinal match 7-5. Though Ruiz held an early lead, Davladze caught up midway through the match and held his opponent at bay to win the title 8-5.
